Muslim rebel bomb attacks South Philippines

A Muslim rebel bomb attacked the South Philippines ahead of a summit of Asian Nations this month and Washington is offering a $50,000 reward for the capture of the bomber. Abdul Basit Usman, a former member of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (Milf) and presumed to have ties with other radical militant groups, is believed to be behind multiple bombings since October 2006. In October 2006 three bombings attributed to Basit Usman were responsible for the killings of eight and injuring of 30 more.

Guerrillas try to stop auction of mining rights

The New People’s Army (NPA), a communist rebel group, raided a Southern Philippine gold mine ahead of an auction for mining rights. These rebels do not want foreign or local corporations mining Philippine sites and have attacked before. This time the guerrillas, some 50-strong set fire to a bulldozer and a welding machine.

Government growing pains

Many Asian countries are trying to grow into democracy. But growth all too often comes with growing pains. In the Philippines, election and overthrow seem to put leaders in office in similar numbers. It's no wonder President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo grew afraid of a coup attempt, called a state of emergency involving security raids on anti-government press offices, which led to the "unwarranted arrests of opposition officials and the brutal suppression of public protests."
