2006 saw its share of natural disasters with floods and storms being the most frequent. The U.N. International Strategy for Disaster Reduction reported that there were 21,796 disaster–related deaths worldwide in 2006, which was down from the 92,000 who died in 2005 because of the Asian tsunami. In the Philippines 1,399 people died in December due to Typhoon Durian, another 1,112 people were killed earlier in the year because of a landslide on the archipelago.Original source: Cay Compass.
