Arrested after petitioning court to drop charges

After resurfacing and petitioning the Supreme Court to have his arrest warrants overturned, Satur Ocampo, of the left-leaning Bayan Muna (Nation First) political party, was in fact arrested. He is wanted for ordering the killing of 15 party members during a purge in the 1980s.

Speaking from detention the Manila police headquarters where he was in detention, the party-list Rep. Satur Ocampo said yesterday his arrest was a "campaign bonanza’’ that would boost his group’s chances in the May 14 polls.

Commission on Elections building burns down in Manilla

Regularly visited by natural disasters, this one appears to have been man-made. The Commission on Elections building was totally razed by fire on Sunday, raising cries of arson, and fears about the loss of valuable documents and the postponement of the May 14 elections.

No election related violence so far

Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos said there has been no recorded election-related incident of violence since the start of the campaign for senatorial and party-list elections in the Philippines.

Philippines gets $11M loan from World Bank

A $11 million loan 'to help the Philippines plug the leaks in its tax collection system', has been approved by World Bank. The bank says that financial reforms have allowed the Philippines to reduce debt and inflation. The peso has risen to a six-year high against the U.S. dollar.
