There were rumblings that the Philippine communist rebel group the New People's Army (NPA) will attempt to use the left-wing political parties in an attempt to win more seats in May's congressional and local elections. This is confirmed by an announcement made by the president's security adviser.

Increasing attacks by rebels on women and children

Problems in the far south are on the increase with mounting attacks by rebels on women and children, according to one civic group here. It is thought that the rationale behind this is to gain the upper hand in the conflict and provoke religious clashes.

Woman executives at home in Bangkok

The latest Grant Thornton International Business Report shows that 97 per cent of businesses in the Philippines have women in top managerial positions. China and Malaysia are a little way behind this, but not much. It appears that 42% of businesses in East Asia, have females in top managerial positions.

Still cheap and cheerful although largely overlooked

The problem is in it's image of being largely corrupt and chaotic, yet the Philippines is a great destination for people on the lookout for something new and different. It is a land of beauty and friendly people, laid back, stable and relatively safe. English is widely spoken and their is much to commend it.

Police probe donations to New People's Army

An official investigation has been launched into reports that local candidates in the Bicol region in the upcoming elections have paid huge amounts to the communist New People's Army so that they can campaign in NPA controlled areas of the country.
