Children still mining in Philippines

Children as young as five are forced to worked long hours in unbearable conditions mining, which is one of the deadliest forms of child labor. The children’s health is threatened the heavy metals that contaminate the soil, water, and air, in addition to the physical dangers. The children cannot go to school and often do not have access to clean water and healthcare. In the Philippines, there are around 18,000 children involved in gold, silver and copper mining.

Poachers caught at reef

The Philippines is home to the Tubbataha reef, which is a protected National Marine Park and produces roughly two percent of the world's fish stock. Thirty Chinese poachers were nabbed by Filipino officials at the reef with tons of live fish including endangered fish that the possession of carries a fine per fish of US$2,400 and a prison term of up to 20 years.

While the 30 Chinese poachers do face a number of charges, they have all been released on bail.
