Before dawn on Tuesday, some government troops ended up attacking an Abu Sayyaf camp, which was located within the southern stronghold of the rebels.
The military claimed that there had been at least five members of al-Qaida linked militants who had been killed, and there was one government militiaman that was severely wounded in the five hour clash that commenced due to the attack against the southern rebel base.
An Abu Syyaf commander that was linked to a series of kidnappings had been among those that were killed in the attack.
